Health and Adults Aging with Intellectual / Developmental Disabilities

In Canada, concerns about the health of various marginalized groups (e.g., Aboriginals, ethnic minorities) are acknowledged and have become a focus for research. Yet little is known about a growing group of adults aging with intellectual / developmental disabilities. A unique cohort, many of these adults are now apparently living to ages seen in the general population, increasingly reside in community settings across the country, and experience age-related health conditions that jeopardize both longevity and quality of life. Health care professionals and community agencies alike are struggling to provide appropriate, timely services to meet their needs particularly if the adult experiences functional or cognitive decline. Engaging communities and self-advocates, cooperative research efforts, and knowledge exchange are fundamental to research having a positive impact on policy and practice. This presentation highlights efforts undertaken by a new faculty member to promote the health and well-being of this specific group on a local, provincial and international level.
